University Education

The higher education sector consists mainly of universities (both government and private). There are 39 Australian universities, of which 2 are private (Bond and Notre Dame). Primary roles of Australian Universities:

A student visa holder is subject to work condition 8105 which permits the student to work 40 hours per fortnight while their course is in session and unlimited hours while their course is not in session. Postgraduate Research students can work unlimited hours once their course commences.

Dependent

Dependent of student visa holders are permitted to work in Australia for 40 hours per fortnight once the student has commenced their course but if the student’s course of study is a course for the award of a masters (course work or research) or doctorate degree registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and courses of Overseas students, a dependent may work unlimited hours.

Requirements

Sufficient level of English language proficiency and the minimum academic qualifications are required by the students before admission in an Australian university. Undergraduate degrees require an Australian Senior School Certificate of Education (Year 12) or the overseas equivalent of this. Some degrees may also have certain pre-requisite subjects and grades. Entry to postgraduate courses requires completion of a Bachelor degree to a satisfactory standard. Prospective students may also need to demonstrate research ability or relevant work experience. University courses cost in Australia is comparable to those in other English speaking countries (USA, UK). In the Australian education system, some degrees are slightly shorter than in other countries. For example, some Bachelor degrees take three years in Australia but four years in the USA.
